It’s my B-day, Vote for The White Rose

Just back from 36 hours of traveling and eagerly waiting to find out where I am in the Idol standings after this weekend… I gave out lots of flyers in NH and even left a few at the comic shop in Northampton as we passed by it this morning, so hopefully we’ll pick up a few new voters from that.

And today’s my birthday, so why not give the gift that keeps on giving and vote for the White Rose:

MONDAY SUPER IDOL REPORT from Ian Shires

OK!!! Here I am…I did some fun calculations and I’m going to do the report a little different today. First the main stats:

2.) 590 Votes (+114) - 130 Voters ( +7) Faction - Judges Vote: 3 Yes.
3.) 510 Votes (+118) - 152 Voters ( +3) The Underground - Judges Vote: 3 Yes.

************** *********The Line for #0/R4 Contention********** *******************
4.) 465 Votes ( +81) - 136 Voters ( +7) Steel Rising - Judges Vote: 3 Yes.

9.) 269 Votes ( +36) - 144 Voters ( +1) Maddie Scientist - Judges Vote: 2 No.
**************** ********The Line for Cover Projects************ ******************
10.) 249 Votes (+29) - 70 Voters ( +1) Diary of a Teenage Heroine - Judges Vote: 3 Yes.
11.) 176 Votes (+19) - 49 Voters (2NC) Dogman and Lester - Judges Vote: 2 No.

15.) 67 Votes (+20) - 54 Voters ( +1) Mr. Man - Judges Vote: 2 Yes.
16.) 14 Votes ( +4) - 31 Voters ( +1) Project Mercury - Judges Vote: 3 NO.
17.) Earthman - Has taken Ill, will eventually be a back up feature.
17.) Dead Duck - Needs personal time, will eventually be a back up feature.
17.) Monsters of Love - Did not turn in pages, will eventually be a back up feature.
17.) Nevil Von Dunst - Did not turn in pages, will eventually be a back up feature.

NOW!!!! What I want to do is give some additional info on the stats of each project right now. First is the Average votes gotten per day, and the second is the total percentage of vote potential the project has been getting in round 3. This is based on the total number of people who have voted for the project, and how often they have voted this round to fill the potential votes. I set it up so new voters do not have to play catch-up on their individual percentage, so someone who just started voting 3 days ago and voted twice so far, missing a day, is a 66%. Just so you know. Anyway, Let’s go!

1.) Varsity Squad
Averaging 20 votes a day, their total percentage of overall fan support is currently 29%.

2.) Faction
Averaging 49 votes a day, with 44% fan support.

3.) The Underground
Averaging 56 votes a day, and 42% fan support.

********** ****The Line for #0/R4 Contention********** **
4.) Steel Rising
Averaging 33 votes a day, and 37% fan support.

5.) The White Rose
Averaging 51 votes a day, and 34% fan support.

6.) Hometown Heroes
Averaging 25 votes a day, and 32% fan support.

7.) The Machine
Averaging 26 votes a day, and 41% fan support.

8.) The Associate
getting 20 votes a day, and 29% fan support.

9.) Maddie Scientist
averaging 19 votes a day and 14% fan support.

********** **The Line for Cover Projects************ *
10.) Diary of a Teenage Heroine
Averaging 18 votes a day, and getting 30% fan support.

11.) Dogman and Lester
averaging 12 votes a day and 26% fan support.

12.) The Doorknob Society
Averaging 21 votes a day, and 34% fan support

13.) Haxxor
Averaging 7 votes a day and 12% fan support.

14.) Boulder Colorado
Averaging 12 votes a day and 24% fan support

15.) Mr. Man
getting 9 votes a day and 19% fan support.

16.) Project Mercury
Getting 2 votes a day, and 9% fan support.

SO!!!!!! What does THAT all mean? Well, the votes per day is pretty self explanatory, but that Fan Support average, that’s the interesting number. How many fans did the project manage to keep from the previous round? How often are the fans voting this round? That’s just a taste of the numbers I have available. And it’s really showing me a lot about the people behind these projects, and the fans that are behind them.

Six More Days to Fulfill a Dream

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for that AWESOME voting turnout last night. I saw White Rose voters popping on and off the dimestore forums like CRAZY last night before I went to bed. If we can do that for JUST SIX MORE DAYS, I will make it into the Top 3 and get my book printed for the Final Round!

By voting, you are helping me fulfill a lifelong dream of being a comicbook creator. A dream I decided to “go for” after getting laid off last November, a life-changing event that I chose to view as an opportunity rather than a misfortune. For your efforts in helping me realize that dream, you have my undying gratitude!

6 MORE DAYS! VOTING ENDS AT MIDNIGHT EST ON JUNE 7TH!

Vote ONCE A DAY until then!

Tuesday 6/2 IDOL REPORT

Only 6 days left of this round of Small Press Idol! Vote for The White Rose once per day to send me to Round 4! http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/forum-t46857.html

And here’s the Tuesday 6/2 IDOL REPORT from Ian Shires

SO! the fight at the top is REALLY heating up, and projects are seriously pulling out all the stops to get in or stay in the Round 4 contention. The fight for Cover Project contention - eh…there’s some signs of life that people are interested in being on the cover of a nationally distributed anthology…we’ll see if anyone actually makes a move, Doorknob Society has a shot, but it’s going to have to maintain it’s intensity today…which was above it’s average.

Faction looks to be trembling in it’s war boots, as The Underground and White Rose, have turned on serious heat. Steel Rising, dropped a notch under the pressure.

I hope the new numbers we’re putting in the standings help all the projects see more clearly where they are at and some additional information to use to prepare themselves for the real world. That Fan% number is very telling. It’s not THAT hard to get people to vote for you ONCE. But maintaining their interest, and keeping them coming back for more, is TOUGH…and that’s what comics are all about. If your percent is low, then you are not connecting with the fans they way you want to. I could go on again about not trying hard enough and such - but maybe that’s not it…maybe you’re just not trying the right things. Go outside of your boxes these last few days, and see how your numbers respond, you may surprise yourself.

IDOL VOTE REPORT 6/3

5 days left of Small Press Idol Round 3! The White Rose is knocking HARD on the door of Round 4! Help us break the door DOWN!
Vote: http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/forum-t46857.html

And here’s the…

IDOL VOTE REPORT 6/3 from Ian Shires

Here we are again folks…the battle royal that is the Idol vote has heated way up, as the top projects are officially in a slug fest. With these top 4 projects, it is currently anyone’s game, and there is no telling who will end the round in the top spot, or even in the top 3. If any one of them blinks, they will fall. And these are hungry projects with rabid fans…a worthy battle going on there.

But the OTHER battle, the battle for a cover spot…seems to be being waged solely by The Doorknob Society. As other projects are casually maintaining position, no one really making a move, Doorknob has turned up the heat, building their fan base, and getting more votes than the projects above it every day.

Here’s an aspect of the contest I’d like to point out: The public scanning the Idol forum section is not looking to hear me talk. My talk is for the projects to consider, mostly. They are here for the extras about your projects thay may or may not win them over, and get them to vote for you. To win the fans of other projects over to your support as well, you CANNOT let MY post be the last one in your threads. The longer it sits there - the less likely someone from another project is going to be to check in on your thread. And worse yet, if you’re getting my posts back to back, I’m sorry to say this - you’ve given up and simply are not trying to win new fans. Right now, there are NINE projects that that’s going to be true about today. Back to back Results posts MEAN you are not trying, period. That’s sad. Not that I can force you guys to take notice, understand that if you won’t do it for yourselves, NO ONE will hand it to you no matter HOW talented you are. But that is my experience, that is what I have seen happen to GREAT BOOKS, by GREAT PEOPLE time and again, because they simply could not market effectively.

I founded the SPA to bring creators together in a place where we can all teach each other how to survive in the 2000+. This contest is a direct result of that. I’ve heard people complain “Idol should be PROVIDING the fans.” - because, that’s what the TV show American Idol does by exposure. As much as we can, we try to. BUT! This is SMALL PRESS - SELF PUBLISHING - we don’t HAVE the luxury of FORD as a sponsor. We’ve done our best to build a Cash prize to chaise that makes this worth notice outside just other publishers circles. Who knows if we’ll GET a huge corporate sponsor someday…Fact remains: We do what we can for you, the rest is really UP TO YOU.

Ok, off my soapbox for today…here’s those numbers!!!

1.) 754 Votes (+84) AVG/DAY: 47 - 156 Voters (+23) FAN%: 55 Varsity Squad - Judges Vote: 2 Yes.

The Village of Bonadin

I thought that tonight I would give some background on the village where the action of the zero-issue story takes place. This also gives a little background on a couple of minor characters that appear in the first 2 or 3 issues - Magda and the Old Bear.

The Village of Bonadin
The fishing Village of Bonadin sits atop a rocky clifface on the eastern coast of the tributary Kingdom of Akitane.

Although small, the less than 100 villagers are fairly well off due to the number of traders and travellers that come up and down the coast road on their way to more populated areas. The first (and sometimes only) part of the village these travellers see is the Inn of the White Rose.

The Inn is named for several overgrown climbing rose vines which cling to the north face of the building and whose blooms are reportedly white in color. Reportedly, because the once-famous roses have not bloomed in about a dozen years. The Innkeeper, a widow named Magda, tends them faithfully every spring but is somewhat mystified as to her utter failure to get anything out of them.

Magda runs the Inn with the help of her daughter(our heroine) and a boy from the village named Alaric, who is apprenticed to her. Alaric also provides alot of the wild game for the Inn’s menu, which he often hunts with his uncle.

Alaric’s uncle is the drillmaster for the local militia. Everyone calls him “The Old Bear” mostly because of his temperament, but he also resembles his name. He’s a large, barrel-chested man with grizzled hair and beard, which he keeps cut short. Old Bear was once a sergeant in the last war, which Akitane lost when it was conquered about 15 years before. After the war, he settled in Bonadin, since it was the only place he still had family living. He is the only person in the village who has ever experienced war directly and has taught the small (less than 20 people) militia everything he knows about formation fighting.

IDOL REPORT 6/4 from Ian Shires

We’re really hitting on the home stretch now folks, and WOW are the top projects kicking up the dust. How is that Round 4 landscape going to end up? Only one thing certain, anything is possible right now.

My little talk yesterday about looking like people were giving up on the MVA Cover contention, shows that there is still some fight left in the lower positions…today there are only 4 projects that will be seeing back-to back Idol reports…which, really is the sign of a project not using the opportunities before them. If there are projects getting more NEW voters in a day, than you are getting votes in a day, then you aren’t doing something right. There are thousands of people out there that would vote for you if they knew of you. how do you win new fans? As an INDUSTRY, indy comic creators need to get together and figure it out. Our contest here TRIES to create an atmosphere where new people will check out new things. And to some extent, we get that. We have yet to really hit that critical mass of explosive numbers, but, we’re definitely stronger this year, again, than the year before.

To further our DIRECTION: by next year, we’re going to have a separate domain and site set up just for Idol, it’s something many have suggested, and I’ve continued to keep the thought back burnered, cause mainly, I didn’t need to make more work for myself. One of last year’s contestants has shown us a way that we can accomplish it AND decrease workload, so we’re talking and getting some preliminary things set up.

ANYWAY! That tangent aside…yesterday was our BIGGEST TRAFFIC DAY EVER…and we’re well on our way to topping it today…so here are your numbers, get out there, get these eyes looking at YOU, show ‘em what you got. Entertain them.

IDOL REPORT 6/5 from Ian Shires

Well. Yesterday saw some RECORD things. Both in votes that came in, and in new voters, and all that. The sheer volume of it is amazing. It unfortunately carries a shadow.

Something called hidemyass.com has become a top referring URL in the past week. It would basically allow anyone to register as many accounts at dimestore as they want, and I couldn’t prove that they were the same person as anyone associated with a project. We are investigating this thoroughly. Anyone with any information about it, can come forward anonymously to me and know I won’t tell WHERE that info came from.

So, IF someone is actually cheating out there, I don’t know if we can catch them in time to make a difference this round. Because, ALL the top project…and a few that aren’t, are showing RECORD new voters. I think my only real solution may be to add a fourth #0 issue to round 4 - and let the Sales round tell the real story. That is NOT a final decision at this point though, I am waiting to learn more about this situation and what the numbers are telling me.

Basically, do I believe that ALL of the users that signed up in rapid fire within minutes of each other and voted…are all individual people? No. But I know SOME are - including a dozen so from a school and another large batch from a store, and I can’t REALLY prove others aren’t. Integrity in this contest needs to be as high as possible. And I’d rather see us include the questionables, than ruin it for everyone…and just make Round 4 a little bigger.

Would that mean I drop the OTHER line down one? I’ll consider it. But. I am not going to make ANY final decisions until AFTER the voting is over. At the rate I’m going right now, it might take a full day to get the info on all the new accounts into the spreadsheet so I can analyze it fully.

One thing I do know - I’ll be able to track which people that voted - BUY in Round 4…so it will become very evident who had real support and who tried to pad their numbers, if that is what’s going on. The shadow that brought this up, remember, is that Hidemyass.com URL IP thing. We’ll figure out more about that.

SO! Today was a big mess, and I had to run out a few times, which is why today’s results are so late. I’m going to leave all of this here, Remember, these are THIS MORNING’s numbers…I’ll be doing another count tomorrow, but that’s going to be the LAST ONE until Monday Morning’s FINAL NUMBERS. It’ll be a very interesting thing to see how this all plays out. Welcome to Idol Round 3 final weekend folks….it’s gonna be a dog fight.

IDOL WEEKEND REPORT from Ian Shires

Well folks…let’s talk about integrity. Everyone is up in arms about the Hidemyass.com revelation for spoofing accounts. We’ve found a way to eliminate accounts from ANY project’s counts, no matter what spoof spoofed them.

First of all: It’s probably IMPOSSIBLE to find out WHO - and we’re not even going to WORRY about WHO. It could be a competitor zapping their higher up, it could be the project itself trying to up it’s counts, it could be a fan thinking they are helping the project they love, it could be someone we cut last year, trying to discredit the contest. who know, it doesn’t matter.

How are we going to handle it? We are tracing back IPs, and flagging any that resolve to nowhere. Then, we’re finding any and all accounts that those IPs have attached in the database. We are contacting them - if there is no reply or if the e-mails bounce…then they are fake accounts, and will be deleted votes and all, AFTER the final count. It will be a day-or two project to un-spoof ourselves, I think. We want to do it as thoroughly as possible, and end with a final 3 that got real votes. Only if I look and see that, after the de-bugging - that the top 4 projects are STILL really close…will I make any decision on if we add a 4th to Round 4. I don’t know what the numbers will tell us yet.

One thing is certain, there ARE lots of new voters, real new voters, in here…and that’s a great thing. We’ll see how it all translates in round 4. Another thing - I struck upon the idea that will make spoofing accounts impossible next year. Not going to unleash it yet. But I am pretty sure it would work really well.

OK! After ANOTHER record day of voting, that saw 4 projects hit into record vote counts - ever…just incredible support out there.

I will not be posting a results count tomorrow. I WILL grab the numbers and reset the polls in the morning, but will not process them until Monday. It will be a huge count, I am sure, and, then I will dig into the data we are getting on accounts that may or may not be real…in the end, I’ll have any decisions made that need made, and we’ll surely have one heckofa show for all in the process. Keep your eyes peeled here folks!

Final Day of Round 3 - White Rose Only 10 Votes Behind

I am 10 votes behind in the count in Small Press Idol for today.

Just 10 votes between me and a place in the Top 3. Every time I get close the guy above me manages to get just enough votes to stay ahead of me. Your support has gotten me this far, now we just need to cross the finish line.

TODAY is the LAST DAY of voting - it ends at Midnight Eastern time.

If you have voted already, please come back and vote again (you can vote once a day).
Here’s the link to vote:

After you sign up, just log in and vote for the White Rose.

Feel free to forward this to anyone else you think might want to participate.

Only your votes can assure me a place in the Top 3 of this contest, which will mean at least one issue of my comicbook series will get printed and sold in the Final Round!

However this turns out, I deeply appreciate all your help and support.

Thanks!
