It’s Hot Outside and Heating up in Small Press Idol!

Had a great weekend touring comic shops in my area. The first retailers have hopped on board with more to follow soon!

In September, if you’re in New England, you’ll be able to get White Rose #0 at the following outstanding comic shops:

Larry’s Comics
68 Lakeview Ave
Lowell, MA
(978) 459-5323

Comic Book Palace
620 Primrose St
Haverhill, MA
(978) 372-1477

Cole’s Comics
510 Boston St
Lynn, MA
(781) 593-5925

And here’s today’s standings from Ian Shires…
*** Idol Heatwave Report Monday 8/17 ***

So it’s HOT outside, and storms on the way…and we’re seeing some solid sales of Idol books now. All in all, the numbers are starting to climb to at least last year levels, so with projected store sales, I think the prospects of breaking records might be realistic despite our having to change cart software just as the round started.. You can slow Idol down, but you can’t keep it down!

Still no major moves, as trends have continued to strengthen each project’s positions, but it’s certainly still anyone’s game, and anything can happen in the less than 2 weeks span left. Here’s today’s standing/numbers!

1.) Copies: 61 (+19) - [Mail: 4] DLs: 13 (+1) Bulk: 10 [1] ( NC) People: 41 (+3) AVG: 31.25 - Faction
2.) Copies: 60 (+20) - [Mail:10] DLs: 14 (+2) Bulk: 0 [0] ( NC) People: 29 (+4) AVG: 25.75 - White Rose
3.) Copies: 33 ( +2) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 2 (NC) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 19 (+2) AVG: 14.75 - The Underground
4.) Copies: 9 ( +2) - [Mail: 0] DLs: 9 (+1) Bulk: 0 [0] ( NC) People: 12 (+2) AVG: 7.50 - Varsity Squad

*** Idol Wednesday Report ***

We’re definitely starting to see the store factor come into play now, as chunks of copies are being registered for Idol for the first time. It’s really showing how different a Round 4 we’re running this year…and the end result is looking to be: More copies will go out to more people than ever before in this contest.

We definitely have projects struggling though. I would think that more than 2 people would want to download a copy of a project, more than a baker’s dozen people would be supporting a top 4 project. How will those projects respond and get back in the game? We’ve just 12 more days of open voting to find out!

1.) Copies: 66 ( +5) - [Mail: 4] DLs: 14 (+1) Bulk: 30 [2] (+20) People: 44 (+3) AVG: 38.50 - Faction
2.) Copies: 69 ( +9) - [Mail:10] DLs: 14 (NC) Bulk: 25 [3] (+25) People: 34 (+5) AVG: 35.50 - White Rose
3.) Copies: 36 ( +3) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 2 (NC) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 20 (+1) AVG: 15.75 - The Underground

*** IDOL THURS REPORT ***

Well, today’s a bit of a game-changer day…after holding the lead for a long time, Faction blinked..and White Rose turned in a store order that boosted them into the lead. Where some stores are doing the wait till the end to order and collect ballots in-store to see what to order, some stores are just guestimating and going for it…interesting…

Varsity Squad also came to life a bit, as we reach this final leg of the contest, it’s going to be a very interesting thing to see what the economy will allow the Idol machine to do this year…with all the new tools we’ve brought into play.

1.) Copies: 71 ( +2) - [Mail:17] DLs: 14 (NC) Bulk: 45 [4] (+20) People: 36 (+2) AVG: 41.50 - White Rose
2.) Copies: 66 ( NC) - [Mail: 4] DLs: 15 (+1) Bulk: 30 [2] ( NC) People: 45 (+1) AVG: 39.00 - Faction
3.) Copies: 39 ( +3) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 2 (NC) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 22 (+2) AVG: 17.00 - The Underground
4.) Copies: 20 (+10) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 9 (NC) Bulk: 0 [0] ( NC) People: 17 (+4) AVG: 11.50 - Varsity Squad

and here’s the standings from Ian Shires…
*** Idol 8/24/09 ***

It was an active weekend of sales for the Idol top 4! We had numbers for all, but obviously some more than others. The Underground roared, but failed to actually move up. Now LEADING the copies category…a blank in the bulk segment is holding them down for now. However, the store numbers, simply really won’t rear their effects till the end. We have no idea what will happen! what we do know, is that these projects are getting serious attention on a national scale - and despite the tough market, retailers that we’ve talked to, have had their customers buzzing about Idol. Here’s the standings right now:

1.) Copies: 78 ( +5) - [Mail:17] DLs: 14 (NC) Bulk: 45 [4] ( NC) People: 40 ( +2) AVG: 44.25 - White Rose
2.) Copies: 71 ( +4) - [Mail: 4] DLs: 19 (+3) Bulk: 30 [2] ( NC) People: 52 ( +5) AVG: 43.00 - Faction
3.) Copies: 89 (+36) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 4 (+2) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 47 (+18) AVG: 36.25 - The Underground
4.) Copies: 29 ( +8) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 9 (NC) Bulk: 0 [0] ( NC) People: 25 ( +7) AVG: 15.75 - Varsity Squad

And here are the standings from Ian Shires…
*** IDOL REPORT 8/25 ***

Big day in the standings! Underground roared up like a magic beanstalk on strong individual sales. Meanwhile Faction hit with a single order to a store, and stepped back over White Rose, which, in the mix, dropped from first to third. As we continue to move towards the finale, I think we’re going to see all the projects pulling out all the stops in the quest for that cash prize and series deal. Who will prevail? I still think it’s going to come down to retailers - but one thing I can say for sure, it’s going to be very interesting!

1.) Copies: 117 (+28) - [Mail: 2] DLs: 5 (+1) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 65 (+18) AVG: 48.00 - The Underground
2.) Copies: 71 ( NC) - [Mail: 4] DLs: 20 (+1) Bulk: 40 [3] (+10) People: 53 ( +1) AVG: 46.00 - Faction
3.) Copies: 79 ( +1) - [Mail:17] DLs: 14 (NC) Bulk: 45 [4] ( NC) People: 41 ( +1) AVG: 44.75 - White Rose

Here’s the current news from the contest’s host…

*** IDOL REPORT 8/26 *** by Ian Shires

Wow, that’s all I can say. It was a wild day in the round…and White Rose bounced back from getting knocked to third place, to reclaim first on the strength of many fans getting more than one copy each. Faction ALMOST trumped it with another solid retailer order - which, in the process, knocked The Underground, back to third…despite their own solid sales of multiple copies to a few individuals.

This is something we knew would be something to seriously watch, counting total copies instead of individuals…and the added mess of downloads and retailers is keeping everyone on their toes…but the real result seems to be, so far, the top 3 projects are all going to have a solid payday in September, as more copies of their #0’s go out to more people than ever before…and that’s the real goal of the contest: Career launching, so the battle is great fun to watch, and I think it’s really going to come down to the retailer orders that roll in at the last call.

I feel bad for Varsity Squad, which - despite doing better than the lowest R4 project last year, isn’t showing the interest and fight of the other projects. They only have a few days left to really turn on their A game and show the world they are an Idol project. We’ll see what happens!

1.) Copies: 124 (+45) - [Mail:14] DLs: 16 (+2) Bulk: 45 [4] ( NC) People: 51 (+10) AVG: 59.00 - White Rose
2.) Copies: 72 ( +1) - [Mail: 5] DLs: 20 (NC) Bulk: 70 [4] (+30) People: 55 ( +2) AVG: 54.25 - Faction
3.) Copies: 129 (+12) - [Mail: 9] DLs: 5 (NC) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 69 ( +4) AVG: 52.00 - The Underground

*** IDOL 8/27 REPORT *** from Ian Shires

We’re zooming at the Finale now folks. And yesterday was a quiet day in the race, till about 11 PM last night…and The Underground roared and clawed it’s way to #1 again. I think I prefer those days where orders come in steady all day long, but whatever marketing e-mail or news hit, worked for them…interesting to see how this weekend plays out with the public, and then, after Monday Night’s deadline…how the retailers roll in…

1.) Copies: 151 (+22) - [Mail:13] DLs: 6 (+1) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 80 (+11) AVG: 60.50 - The Underground
2.) Copies: 126 ( +2) - [Mail:15] DLs: 16 (NC) Bulk: 45 [4] ( NC) People: 53 ( +2) AVG: 60.00 - White Rose
3.) Copies: 73 ( +1) - [Mail: 5] DLs: 20 (NC) Bulk: 70 [4] ( NC) People: 55 ( +1) AVG: 54.50 - Faction
4.) Copies: 32 ( +2) - [Mail: 3] DLs: 9 (NC) Bulk: 0 [0] ( NC) People: 27 ( +1) AVG: 17.00 - Varsity Squad

*** IDOL 8/28 REPORT *** from Ian Shires

The numbers have gotten VERY interesting…on a few levels. The patterns of voting, and effects of those votes on the average system we put in place this year, is telling me more about each project than ever before. So that’s a good thing. For me, and for the contest, cause, the race is TIGHT, and that keeps people talking about it…and all of the projects are the winners then.

So! No actual place changes, but, hello Varsity Squad…proof positive that one bulk order can be a game changer. And we know we have multiple bulk orders to come, as the deadline races towards us.

But then of course, it raises the specter of that one order that can change the game, is that fair? And doesn’t that invite “buying” the contest? It’s something we’ll have to give further thought and development to for next year…as the retailers do seem to have all the power here. Exciting stuff though.

here’s today’s numbers!!! I’ll likely try to do one over the weekend, then Monday…we start the mail-in/retailer order watch for a few days…and should be able to announce a winner by next Friday….

1.) Copies: 171 (+20) - [Mail:13] DLs: 6 (NC) Bulk: 5 [1] ( NC) People: 93 (+13)
AVG: 68.75 - The Underground
2.) Copies: 137 (+11) - [Mail:15] DLs: 20 (+4) Bulk: 45 [4] ( NC) People: 58 ( +5)
AVG: 65.00 - White Rose
3.) Copies: 84 (+11) - [Mail: 5] DLs: 24 (+4) Bulk: 70 [4] ( NC) People: 62 ( +7)
AVG: 60.00 - Faction
4.) Copies: 33 ( +1) - [Mail: 3] DLs: 9 (NC) Bulk: 135 [1] (+135) People: 28 ( +1)
AVG: 51.25 - Varsity Squad

*** IDOL WEEKEND REPORT *** from Ian Shires

The orders continue to come in pretty solid and across the board, but the rumblings from the retailers have been getting louder as we’ve gotten a few more accounts registered - and we’ll be seeing how their orders change things soon! For now…the current standings….

1.) Copies: 191 + DLs: 6 + Bulk: 5 + People: 111 divided by 4 =
AVERAGE SCORE: 78.25 - The Underground
2.) Copies: 155 + DLs: 27 + Bulk: 45 + People: 69 divided by 4 =
AVERAGE SCORE: 74.00 - White Rose
3.) Copies: 88 + DLs: 27 + Bulk: 70 + People: 69 divided by 4 =
AVERAGE SCORE: 63.50 - Faction
4.) Copies: 45 + DLs: 10 + Bulk: 135 + People: 32 divided by 4 =
AVERAGE SCORE: 55.50 - Varsity Squad

And I Said, Self… How Did You Get Here?

As the last grains of my sanity slowly drip away like the sand from an hourglass, I have time to pause and reflect on this crazy ride that has been Small press Idol 2009, and I’m reminded of the even longer ride that caused me to impulsively sign up for Idol back in March…

When I was about 5 or 6. I started making my own comics on loose-leaf paper and stapled them together to show to my friends.

Later when I was about 19, and a lot more serious, but not much more organized, I tossed all my artwork into a portfolio and took the train from Boston to New York for $19 (yeah it was that long ago). My plan was to walk into the offices of Marvel Comics unannounced and amaze them with my brilliance but it didn’t quite work out that way.

I got as far as a very nice receptionist who took my art and promised that Jim Shooter would look at it, and to come back at the end of the day. The concept of ’submission guidelines’ was not something that had ever entered my brain at that point, but when I went back at the end of the day, that’s what I got a copy of, along with a very nice “try again after you’ve looked those over”.

I was actually kind of crushed by the whole experience. Not their fault at all, but more a result of my overinflated expectations at the tender age of nineteen. Back in those days of 1983 there was no easy-to-find support system for young comics artists or the massive sharing of knowledge that we have now. So I ended up drifting away from comics and art altogether and putting aside my thoughts of going to art school for many years.

It wasn’t until I got into animation in the 90’s that the creative spark was reawakened in me. I ended up going back to school and studying both digital and traditional animation for a couple of years. I got good feedback and critiques from both instructors and fellow students, and a more mature and temperate confidence began to grow in me. While working on animation storyboards for school projects, I found myself suddenly back working in a very similar visual language to my first love: comics. A few years and an economic-downturn-job-loss later, it was a very short hop to deciding to ‘go for it’ with my original childhood dream.

And that more or less brings us to today. With less than seven hours to go, I am strangely calm because I know that no matter how Idol turns out, I’ve finally jumped off of it, and that was the moment I touched down.

Thanks for your support,
George Burnett

**** Deadline Day REPORT **** from Ian Shires

Well, it was a hugely active weekend, and projects are solidly into record territory, blowing away all expectations of sales this year, and we still haven’t seen the full brunt of Retailer orders and Haven’s results.

Clearly, Idol has gone crazy in the best way possible for all the creators.

Not even going to bother analyzing these numbers, the race is obviously not over, and a lot of people are out in force to get entertained.
